Overview

A prominent issue and wine industry priority is ongoing management of the biosecurity challenge posed by phylloxera.  Since phylloxera was first detected in the Yarra Valley in 2007, the subsequent spread of the pest within the current boundary of the Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ) has placed regulatory and compliance pressures on the region’s grape industry.

Now growers, vineyard managers and other interested industry stakeholders in the Yarra Valley Geographic Indicator (GI) can have a say on changing the Maroondah PIZ boundary.

Have your say – complete the survey

Agriculture Victoria is collaborating with the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association (YVWGA) to survey growers and vineyard managers in the region on their views for changing the existing boundary of the Maroondah Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ).

Agriculture Victoria is supporting the YVWGA’s move to hear the voice of local industry before any decision is made regarding the possibility of expanding the existing boundary for the PIZ.

After completing the survey, the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association (YVWGA) and Agriculture Victoria can evaluate the advantages of expanding the existing boundary of the Maroondah PIZ to include other areas currently recognised as the Phylloxera Risk Zone (PRZ).

Giving us your views via the survey will:

  • clarify any merits of and support for extending the Maroondah PIZ boundary, and how any change may affect your approach to best practice on-farm biosecurity.
  • help inform the region’s wine industry’s decision-making going forward for phylloxera management in the Yarra Valley.
  • help the YVWGA and Agriculture Victoria promote awareness of the biosecurity requirements for growers and vineyard managers operating in a PIZ environment.

The survey will close on 15 June 2018.

Please go to the survey. Your feedback is appreciated and we thank you for taking the time to complete the survey.

What’s next?

The initial outcome of this survey will be posted on the Yarra Valley Wine Growers Association, Agriculture Victoria and Victorian Viticulture Biosecurity Committee websites before 30 June 2018.

A thorough analysis of this survey will be presented at an industry forum in the Yarra Valley in August 2018.
